Dental procedures explained… (Not quite sure what your dentist meant? Here it is explained in “layman’s terms”)
So you went to see your dentist and he recommended you get veneers – what are veneers?
Simply put, it is an ultra thin layer of ceramic or composite material that is bonded to the front (buccal) surface of your tooth/teeth – think false nail fitted and glued over your real nail – to change the length, shape, colour or size of your teeth and improve the appearance of your teeth and overall smile.
Veneers, also known as thineers, are customised, can be as thin as 0.3mm and made from different materials. Our dental technicians here at Newvision Dental Laboratory prefer to use IPS e.max press ceramic (lithium disilicate glass ceramic) for its natural esthetics and translucency – i.e. it looks exactly like real teeth and can be stained perfectly to match your surrounding teeth!
There are many reasons you may be “prescribed” veneers, however they can be broken down into two categories – cosmetic dentistry (to beautify your smile) and restorative dentistry (to restore your smile) For which ever reason, veneers are a more conservative solution and requires minimal prepping and drilling. A great way to obtain that smile make over with those beautiful new teeth you have always dreamed of.
Veneers can be used to fix or correct the following dental problems:
- Discoloured teeth – due to a previous Root canal procedure/treatment, stains from Tetracycline, too much fluoride, smoking, drug use or day to day causes; or the presence of resin tooth fillings that may have discoloured the teeth.
- Worn teeth or teeth that are broken or chipped
- Uneven, irregular shaped, rotated or misaligned teeth
- Small or undersized teeth
- To close a diastema – gaps between your teeth
They can also be used to:
- Boost a patients confidence
- Prevent further damage to teeth
- Smile makeovers
So what does a veneer cost?
The price of veneers varies from dentist to dentist and while it is perfectly normal to seek out an affordable dentist, cheap dentistry is not always your best option – rather look for dentists that are well known and come highly recommended, but more importantly, that work with a Dental Laboratory that is recognised for producing quality dental work as they will be making your veneers.
